About
The Bobby Thompson Trio is a high-octane ensemble that captures the raw, improvisational energy of the American roots scene. Fronted by Bobby Carrillo-Thompson on vocals and his signature slide guitar, the trio is anchored by the deep groove of bassist Kurt Kratch and the precision of drummer Andy Hamburger. Together, they build a sound that bridges gritty blues-rock with soulful, exploratory arrangements, a chemistry honed through years of collaboration within the Root Nine Records family.
While the core trio remains the heart of the performance, the lineup frequently expands to include special guests, bringing fresh textures and guest instrumentalists into the fold to elevate the live experience. This fluid approach allows the group to remain spontaneous and connected to the moment, whether they are delivering hard-driving electric sets or more nuanced, groove-heavy explorations. Focusing on the evolution of the original album experience, the trio continues to serve as a mainstay for authentic, unvarnished music in the D.C. area and beyond.
Watch the Trio, with special guest Buddy Speir, tear up a four-song live set at JV’s in Falls Church VA. The group performed Robert Johnson’s “Steady Rollin’ Man”, Albert King’s “Heart Fixer”, Albert Collins’ “If You Love Me Like You Say”, and “Don’t Take Advantage of Me” by Johnny Winter.
The trio has been in the studio since late 2025 working on pre-production recordings for their next album. Coming off the heels of an excited Texas Blues Tribute in October and Hendrix Tribute shows in November, the trio cut Jimi’s “Hear My Train A Comin’” live at Area 51 Studios in College Park MD, engineered by the legendary Tommy Lepson.
